Special Considerations for Soils in Castle Pines

Take a minute and review the soils samples report from the area or close by neighboring area. It doesn't take a geologist to read any comprehend this report. In this case we were able to locate a Daniels Park Road Improvement Project from 2008. Swelling soils are common all from Colorado Springs up into South Denver and out west to Ken Caryl. For Castle Pines concrete projects, additional preparation is a prudent move to insure longer life out of your concrete.

Our crew has learned how to best prepare, reinforce and finish your Castle Pines project. The average driveway in the country club area is well over 1,500 ft². With the larger driveways control joint and release cut design are critical for crack control. In addition to this base preparation as well as reinforcement are important in planning the design of your new concrete.

Concrete Reinforcement is Key!

concrete reinforcement is critical for driveways, extended drives, hot tub pads or any pad that is going to hold substantial weight

It is amazing that we ever tear out a driveway or hot tub pad that is not reinforced. But it's true, some concrete crews will skip this very critical step during the installation process. Without reinforcement bar or at the least wire mesh reinforcement, concrete can heave substantially creating significant uneveness in the surface of your garage floor or driveway. In the image above, a close up of our crew tying the reinforcement grid together. The reinforcement bar in this picture is number 3 or 3/8" in diameter.

concrete heaving and cracking severly because no reinforcement mesh or reinforcement bar

In the image above, note the severe cracking and heaving taking place in this car port floor. There is heaving of over 4" and cracks or separation of over 2". The entire south side of the car port floor has dropped significantly with this heaving. This has caused the roof of the carport to sag as well. So much so that it is completely visible from the street.

Reinforcement is key to having the strength needed to support heavy weight loads such as a vehicle, hot tub or swim spa pad. Too much reinforcement can lead to weakened concrete, it is important to use the appropriate amount of reinforcement. Additionally it is important that the reinforcement is placed correctly. Placing the reinforcement at the bottom of the pad will not give the pad the tensile strength intended and if the grid sits to high it will weaken the surface of the concrete.
